Seeking addiction treatment is a major decision, and there are many different treatment programs to choose from. Two of the main treatment styles include partial hospitalization programs (PHP) and intensive outpatient treatment. These addiction treatment programs differ from inpatient treatment, because they allow patients to live in their own home or a non-hospital setting during their treatment process. Partial hospitalization programs and intensive outpatient treatment have fewer requirements and different “rules,” but are just as effective as inpatient addiction treatment.
Partial Hospitalization Program Basics
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is the highest-level outpatient program you can take part in for addiction treatment. At Rise Above Treatment we use a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy, education, 12-step principles, medication management, and process group therapy. Clients in this program are able to live in their own home nearby, but many choose to stay in the “homestyle” sober living centers that we have to offer. The benefit of staying in the sober living environment during PHP addiction treatment is having access to medical professionals and support staff at all times, which is especially important during the detox process and initial days.
Our PHP takes place from 9am to 3:30pm Monday through Friday, allowing clients to adopt a routine schedule. In addition to the addiction treatment itself, we also take our clients to experience sober social events and adventures throughout Southern California such as sporting events, beach trips, and hiking excursions. There’s a lot to experience out in Southern California, and our centers are located about an hour away from the beach, mountains, desert, and more!
Intensive Outpatient Treatment Basics
Intensive outpatient treatment programs are ideal for individuals who have completed some sort of addiction treatment in the past and are risking relapse or have relapsed. This unique, hands-on approach to addiction treatment has been proven effective. Typically, clients must participate in an inpatient detox before they can enter intensive outpatient treatment, allowing them to safely detox for the most successful outcome.
Intensive outpatient treatment is adaptable to the client’s life, including your personal, professional, and family life. Because you do not spend the majority of your time in treatment, you must have a strong drive to get sober and stay sober.
During intensive outpatient treatment, you are able to make the transition from inpatient addiction treatment to the real world. Unlike partial hospitalization programs, intensive outpatient treatment is less time consuming – but still just as beneficial. In Rise Above’s intensive outpatient treatment, client’s are assigned an individual therapist, but also participate in process groups that are small in size. Being located in Southern California, there are many opportunities for picking up new routines and hobbies during addiction treatment, and intensive outpatient treatment allows you to have the time to partake in other activities and adventures.
Which Option is Right for You
Although intensive outpatient treatment and partial hospitalization programs have similar characteristics, they offer different experiences. Intensive outpatient treatment is for people who have already undergone an alternative type of addiction treatment and need to get back on track. Partial hospitalization programs are for individuals who want to get sober, but have other commitments that do not allow them to undergo inpatient treatment for a long period of time.
No matter what stage of addiction recovery you are in, you have options and do not have to enter the great unknown alone.
